13-Year-Old Who Was Allegedly Groped on Plane by Stranger Speaks Out for the First Time

A 13-year-old girl who was allegedly groped by another passenger aboard an American Airlines flight from Dallas, Texas, to Portland, Oregon, opened up about her traumatic experience for the first time on Friday.

In an interview with Inside Edition, Mackenzie Miller detailed her harrowing June flight. Her family paid an extra fee under the airline’s Unaccompanied Minor Program, which was established to protect young children who are not traveling with an adult, according to Inside Edition.

But while Miller was supposedly being protected, Chad Camp, a 26-year-old man seated next to her, allegedly touched her inappropriately. The family filed a $10 million lawsuit in July against American Airlines for this young girl’s horrifying trip from her father’s home in Texas.

According to the suit, almost as soon as he sat next to her Camp allegedly began to “rub up against [the girl], lean close to her and fondle her body with his hand.”

This went on for about 30 minutes, according to the suit – with Camp allegedly moving up to the girl’s upper thigh and crotch – until a flight attendant serving snacks saw Camp with his hand allegedly on the girl. The teen had “a tear falling from her cheek,” according to the suit.

“I would never think this would happen,” Mackenzie said. “You see this stuff and you think, ‘That’s crazy,’ and then it happens to you and it’s shocking.”

Camp was arrested just after the flight landed and charged with abusive sexual contact. He has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trail.

“He was able to touch her,” the teen’s mom Rachel Miller told Inside Edition. “He was basically able to do whatever he wanted.”

The family’s lawyer Brent Goodfellow told Inside Edition that Mackenzie as “devastated.”

“She didn’t want to be on an airplane again when I talked to her after the flight,” he said. “She didn’t even want to be touched or hugged by her mom.”

In July, an American Airlines spokesperson told PEOPLE in a statement that the company is reviewing the suit and “[we] continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement officials in their investigation of the suspect.”

The spokeswoman continued, “American cares deeply about our young passengers and is committed to providing a safe and pleasant travel experience for them.”
