A Quick Guide To Supporting Abortion Providers That Need It Most

This post has been updated to include information about more clinics than when we originally published. We will continue to update it to include as many clinics as possible.

Access to reproductive health care under President-elect Donald Trump’s administration is not looking good. During his “60 Minutes” interview on Sunday night, Trump flippantly said that if Roe v. Wade is repealed, “it would go back to the states” to set abortion laws, and women would simply have to go to surrounding states for their abortions if their own state no longer allowed it ― a “solution” that’s unrealistic for many women.

Since Trump’s win was announced on Wednesday morning, people have responded by donating tons of money to Planned Parenthood ― Katy Perry donated 10 thousand dollars, and many people are donating in honor of the staunchly anti-abortion VP-elect Mike Pence. Planned Parenthood will very likely continue to be a target for major government defunding, even though the organization provides services well beyond abortion.

But while Planned Parenthood is an essential health care organization that provides vital services for millions of American men and women every year, it is not the only one of its kind. There are hundreds of clinics across the country providing the same indispensable services that lack Planned Parenthood’s name recognition and therefore its resources. Donating to these clinics, and keeping their doors open, has never been more vital.

“Independent clinics need support,” Dr. Willie Parker, who provides abortion services at the last remaining abortion provider in Mississippi and who serves as Board Chair for Physicians for Reproductive Health, told The Huffington Post. “Those clinics don’t have the capital resources that Planned Parenthood has, it becomes really important to support local abortion funds.”

Collective rage at what a Trump administration might look like for reproductive rights is a great thing, but, according to Parker, it’s important to think about what you can do on the ground. “What people need to do on the ground is think globally and act locally,” he said.

If making a financial donation isn’t possible, also consider volunteering your time as a clinic escort ― serving as a physical barrier between patients and anti-abortion protestors.

Dr. Parker said that support like that ― on top of a simple letter of support or phone call ― is also incredibly helpful for clinics at this time.

While the lists of pro-choice organizations and local abortion clinics below is by no means exhaustive, it’s a start. We chose the below clinics for a few reasons: many are the sole abortion provider for hundreds of miles, serving communities from out-of-state. Many of them are regularly targeted by anti-abortion protestors. Many of them are in states where the topic of abortion is so stigmatized that women are driven to dangerous measures to end pregnancies, like drinking Clorox.

Here are the groups that are most in need of support.

National organizations:

National Abortion Federation: a national federation of independent abortion clinics and Planned Parenthood clinics. Donations can be designated to a number of services including clinic security staff, patient assistance funds, pro-choice advocacy and more. All of the below clinics are members of NAF.

Abortion Care Network: a national organization similar to NAF. Donations go to support for independent abortion providers exclusively.

NARAL Pro-Choice America: a national lobbying group with state affiliates who work with the government to advocate for women’s right to choose.
