Chandler police ID man suspected of running light, killing woman

William Joseph Epperlein, 39, was identified by Chandler police Sunday morning as the man suspected of running a red light and causing the death of a mother and the injury of her two children.

The 35-year-old woman was killed and her two children, ages 2 and 3, were in serious condition after they were struck while crossing the road Saturday evening, said Chandler Police spokesman Sgt. Daniel Mejia. Epperlein was driving westbound on Ray Road near College Avenue when he sped past the red light.

The mother and children were taken to a local hospital where the mother was pronounced dead, Mejia said.

Police arrested the Epperlein on the suspicion of causing death by use of a vehicle while driving on suspended license, a class 4 felony according to Mejia.

The Chandler Police Department closed the roadway while they conducted their investigation at the intersection is on the Tempe/Chandler border.

Police are still working to gather details on the circumstances of the collision, Mejia said.

Updated conditions of the children were not known Sunday.
