Doctor Strange Pushes Disney Past $6 Billion Box Office Milestone

“Doctor Strange” hasn’t even been in U.S. theaters a full week, but it has already taken over $85 million domestically at the U.S. box office, in addition to the more than $240 million worth of tickets it has sold overseas. More than $44 million of this came from the film’s debut in the increasingly-important Chinese market.

“Doctor Strange’s” strong opening has helped the various film studios owned by the House of Mouse to a new record year at the box office, with $6.07 billion box office gross so far this year, according to Deadline.

This gross is set to grow even further in December with the release of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

Disney is now the second film studio to stack up a six-billion gross in a single year; Universal racked up a $6.89-billion haul in 2015.

Many of the films that have powered Disney’s powerful cinema performance this year have been the products of various shrewd purchases the company has made over that past decade, starting with the acquisition of the computer animation studio Pixar in 2006. Disney went on to buy Marvel Comics in 2009, which had recently launched its own film studio, and then Lucasfilm, including the entire Star Wars franchise, in 2012.

Directed by Scott Derrickson, and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benjamin Bratt, Scott Adkins, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton, “Doctor Strange” is currently playing in theaters worldwide.
