VIJAYAWADA: The state government added 23 more mandals to the drought-affected list in the state, taking the total number to 268. It may be recalled that on October 21, the government declared drought in 245 mandals from seven districts of the state.
In a government order (MS 10) released late on Saturday night, the commissioner of disaster management department K Dhananjaya Reddy said that the 23 mandals are from Prakasam district. “The district collector of Prakasam has submitted proposals for additional 33 mandals for declaration as drought affected during south west monsoon, 2016. The committee constituted to examine the proposals has met on November 9 and scrutinised the proposals and recommended addition of 23 more mandals to the drought affected list,” he said.
It may be recalled that the revenue (disaster) department had already declared 23 mandals of Prakasam as drought affected in the GO released on October 21. With the addition of 23 more mandals, drought is declared in 46 of total 56 mandals of the district.
While the 268 mandals declared so far are from Anantapur, Chittoor, Kadapa, Kurnool, Nellore, Prakasam and Srikakulam, proposals from district administrations of Krishna, Guntur, East Godavari, West Godavari, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam are yet to be received by the revenue (disaster) department. Officials said that the total number of drought-hit mandals is likely to increase once the proposals from the remaining six districts are sent.
