Is There a Captain Marvel Reference in Doctor Strange?

Among all the time-bending, reality-altering action of “Doctor Strange,” one of the smaller details has really grabbed the imagination of Marvel fans, who believe it could be an allusion to a character who is due to get her own movie soon: Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel.

For those who missed it, the reference in question comes shortly before the good Doctor’s car crash, when he is told about potential patients. One is described as a “22 year-old female with an electronic implant in her brain to control schizophrenia – struck by lightning.”

Although this is not Carol got her powers in the comics, there has been plenty of speculation that the film version of Carol Danvers is going to have a different origin story. It is possible, then, that this new origin could involve a lightening strike.

According to Empire Magazine, “Doctor Strange” director Scott Derrickson was uncharacteristically circumspect when he was asked about the possibility, saying, “All I can [say] is…maybe. That one, you’re going to have to wait and see.”

When Entertainment Weekly asked Derrickson a similar question, they got an equally enigmatic answer: “Remember that Brittany Murphy movie where she goes ‘I’ll never tell…’,” which seems to be a reference to the 2001 thriller “Don’t Say a Word.” However, the director could be giving us a confirmation, a non-confirmation confirmation – or he could just be messing with us.

Directed by Scott Derrickson, and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benjamin Bratt, Scott Adkins, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton, “Doctor Strange” is currently playing in theaters worldwide.
