Following a series of troubling outbursts and the cancellation of the rest of his Saint Pablo tour, Kanye West has been hospitalized for what’s being reported as a “psychiatric emergency.” According to one source, the rapper has been suffering from mental exhaustion and sleep deprivation, and went to the hospital voluntarily.
E! reports that a person who voluntarily admits themselves to the hospital under a psychiatric emergency will first be medically assessed, and then possibly held for up 72 hours if necessary. The goal of hospitalization is to provide safety above all, and then steer the patient in the right direction for psychiatric help.
Kanye’s extreme mental exhaustion is a common reason for hospitalization, especially among the overworked. It may be caused by a number of lifestyle factors, such as excessive physical activity, and is often linked with mental health factors, such as depression. This, combined with a high amount of sleep deprivation, can be confusing to treat. Many symptoms of depression can feel similar to exhaustion, and, when combined with the physical stress of something like a tour, can be too much to handle in the same way we usually attempt to maintain stability on our own. So while Kanye’s hospitalization might come as a shock, it’s important to remember that getting help in any way you can is always the best route when faced with mental and physical strain.
For now we know very little about Kanye’s situation, but sources close to the family report that his wife, Kim, has returned home from a previous obligation to accompany him in the time of need. Many are linking his recent rants during his tour, in which he’s expressed support for Donald Trump and resentment towards Beyoncé and Jay Z, to his ultimate need for help, but for now all assumptions remain speculation. This is obviously a rough time for the family, and we wish Kanye, Kim, and their two children the best.
