Laurie Hernandez’s Grandmother’s Death Was Kept Secret From Her for 2 Days

Olympic gold medalist Laurie Hernandez has been through an awful lot this week. Last Friday, she received the sad news that her grandmother passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, and just days later, she had to appear onstage for an episode of Dancing With the Stars. In an interview on DWTS, Laurie explained that she was so close to her grandma, and that she had fond memories of enjoying her grandma’s cooking and spending time with her.

It turns out that Laurie’s grandma, Brunilda Hernandez, actually passed away last Wednesday – two full days before Laurie found out. According to , Laurie’s dance partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy helped decide to tell Laurie the news. It’s unclear as to why Laurie didn’t find out for two days, but we know that many reality shows often keep their cast members quarantined from the outside world. The fact that Val knew makes it seem like other people had more information than Laurie herself, which certainly raises some eyebrows. After all, it’s never okay to lie to someone about their family – reality show or not.

Val explained that he didn’t feel that it was right to shelter Laurie from something that belonged to her. “It’s hers to face and hers to grow from and hers to understand as well,” Val explained.

Laurie expressed that she was grateful for Val’s sensitivity and support. “Without him,” Laurie said, “I would have probably not been able to dance as well as I did today – or even dance at all.” And to say that Laurie danced well is an understatement – she earned a perfect score on her foxtrot and went on to be a finalist in the competition.
