Watching 21 years after it debuted sparks all kinds of questions, namely: Does Paul Rudd age? Why don’t we all have closets like Cher’s?! (We are living in the future, aren’t we?!) And, most obviously, is that what really happens when you just dump a roll of cookie dough on a baking sheet and leave it in the oven?
We don’t have answers for the first two, but for the third, we decided to take matters into our own hands and test things out. For science. And the betterment of mankind*.
As the video above proves, the cookie dough log doesn’t stay in the same tube-like shape it came in once it’s heated. It starts to spread out, getting crispy along the edges while staying gooey in the center. At 375 degrees F, the cookie gets perfectly golden, without turning into a charred, blackened crisp. It basically becomes an oval-shaped cookie cake.
Now, had we left it in the oven until smoke came pouring out, it’d probably look closer to a charred, deformed pancake that’s hard as a brick-great for taking out criminals (like, say, a robber who steals your phone and ruins your Alaïa dress). But for snacking on date night, or a girls’ night? As if.
We tried to envision what Cher would’ve done to these cookies, had they (mostly) gone according to plan. Since she’s not exactly a cook-or a baker-we thought she’d be on board with a low-effort, epic sundae. You can top yours with whatever’s in the freezer. If you’re going shopping, try it with salted caramel ice cream. Or go meta with cookie dough. You won’t be disappointed. Trust.
Whatever combination you go with, don’t forget the melted peanut butter. It’s a must, like wearing your most capable-looking ensemble before taking your driver’s test. (Put the PB in a microwave-safe bowl and micro it in 20-second intervals until it’s smooth and easy to drizzle.)
The movie’s currently available to stream on Netflix, so you really have no excuse not to whip up a monstrous sundae and relive the ’90s, yellow plaid blazers and all.
