Robert Vaughn dead at 83 following battle with acute leukaemia

Vaughn – who has starred in more than 150 movies, some of which he even admitted to forgetting – was born into a theatrical family, with his mother, Marcella Frances, working as a stage actress and his father, Gerald Vaughn, a radio actor.

Unlike his parents, Vaughn was destined for a life on the big screen and starred in movies including The Magnificent Sevenm, in which he portrayed skittish gunman Lee, and Walter Chalmers in Bullitt.

It was his role as war veteran Chester A. Gwynn in The Young Philadelphians which earned him a 1960 Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
