When Solange made her Saturday Night Live debut over the weekend, she emerged to perform “Cranes in the Sky” in a headpiece that served as part halo, part crown and all-around magic. The hairdresser-or hair artist, rather-behind the intricate look is Shani Crowe, who has been braiding since she was 11 years old and now specializes in elaborate, structural hairstyles.
One of her works, called “Fingerwave Saint,” inspired the singer’s late-night performance look, Crowe explained to
Solange, however, wanted her version to have a little more sparkle. “[Solange] expressed that she wanted to add Swarovski beads for a highly reflective look, and sent some images of bedazzled clothing she was inspired by,” Crowe told the magazine. “I worked within those parameters and started to create the piece.”
Over 40 hours of braiding and 2,000 Swarovski crystals later, she arrived to this mesmerizing finished product, which the singer proudly wore onstage.
Even Beyoncé got to have her turn with the hairpiece after the show.
