After a Gulf War veteran fell one day, he suffered from a brain bleed that caused him to slip into a coma. The doctors tried everything they could to save the husband and father and even removed part of his skull.
However, after his condition failed to improve, the doctors started fearing the worst and explained to Frank Bedwell’s wife and kids that even if he did wake up from the coma, he would be in a vegetative state, and would never be able to do anything ever again.
Amy Bedwell, Frank’s wife, and their kids knew he wouldn’t want to live his life that way, and made the impossible decision to take him off life support. “My kids and myself, we all knew what he would want for himself. We knew that he didn’t want to live on machines for the rest of his life,” Amy said.
Frank was scheduled to be taken off life support at 6 pm, but 15 minutes before, Amy and the kids gathered around his bed to say their final goodbyes., called their grandfather over the phone, and said a prayer over his body. “Fifteen minutes before it was time to pull the plug, I sent everybody out except for my kids,” Amy said. “We called my dad. We prayed for him. And he woke up.”
“To me and my family, it was a spiritual experience. We believe in miracles. And anybody that was involved in this situation with him, it was miraculous. We went from a man that was in a vegetative state and saying that he was not ever going to do anything ever again to now he’s reading words on flashcards,” Amy said.
“I believe as long as his family and his loved ones are there to encourage him and believe in him and have faith in him that I believe he can do anything,” said Amy, who is now hoping for another miracle after she’s been left with massive debt since the VA won’t cover his medical bills.
