In the summer of 2014, one of Marvel Studios’ riskiest films yet Guardians of the Galaxy released in theaters and became the third highest-grossing film of that year. Not many would have guessed that a movie based on relatively unknown characters, played by up-and-coming actors, set in space and featuring a talking tree and raccoon would do so well at the box office. And yet it was a big hit for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, landing in the franchise’s top 10 most successful movies ever. A sequel reuniting the cast with writer-director James Gunn is scheduled to be released next year.
Guardians of the Galaxy is also the gift that keeps on giving commercially, as merchandise continues to fly off the shelves. While dancing Groot in all his incarnations is probably the clear winner, the official soundtrack with 1980s nostalgia music, toys (including Lego sets), clothing, jewelry, etc. have also been very popular. Disney Interactive even released an RPG video game in 2014 titled Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon for mobile devices, but now a new Guardians game from TellTale Games is expected to come out next year.
TellTale Games (the creator of various Jurassic Park, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead and games) first inked a deal with Marvel Entertainment last year. Their first entry for the franchise was scheduled to release in 2017, and now we know that it’ll probably be for Guardians of the Galaxy. As a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike for wage negotiations in October, a list that includes future titles for voice-over jobs has been released to the public. Included on that list is the game Guardians of the Galaxy: The Video Game (aka Blue Harvest).
The alternate title of Blue Harvest doesn’t seem to have any connection to Guardians of the Galaxy itself, but it’s possibly a reference to , which influenced the movie in a number of ways. In fact, Blue Harvest was the development title for Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, so it could simply be a homage to its space-alien movie predecessor. Similarly, Akira Kurosawa’s film Yojimbo, reportedly based on Dashiell Hammet’s 1929 novel Red Harvest, was a big influence on a young George Lucas.
So far, all recent Telltale Games properties have been released on Android, iOS, Win, OS X, as well as gaming systems like PS3, PS4, X360 and Xbox One. This will be the first time Guardians of the Galaxy gets their very own console game, and it’s just in time for the release of the second movie next year. It’s not an official confirmation, as any number of issues could put it on hold indefinitely, but at the very least SAG-AFTRA has confirmed in their memo that the project is still in production.
