Thanksgiving Taste Test: Stinky Casserole

FIX THIS – We asked for your recipes and you answered! Lori Underwood’s recipe immediately caught our eye with the name, “Stinky Casserole.” She promised us the recipe was delicious, so we decided to give it a try and see what some of the staff here at 9NEWS thought!

Here is the email Lori sent in:

“Hi –

This is our family favorite. If someone doesn’t prepare it, Thanksgiving isn’t complete! It doesn’t have a formal name, but we call it “Stinky Casserole” because the preparation of it does smell up your kitchen a bit! (All those cruciferous vegetables)

3 lbs frozen broccoli/cauliflower combination

1 lb frozen brussels sprouts

1 lb Cheese Whiz or Velveeta

2 cans cream of mushroom soup

Can of french fried onions for the top

Cook and drain all vegetables as instructed on packages. Heat together cheese and soup. Pour mixture over vegetables you have placed in casserole dishes. Top with french fried onions. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degree oven until bubbly.

This makes approximately one large or two small casseroles.

Really – it is amazing!

Enjoy,

While I was cooking it, I was admittedly afraid of what my house would smell like when it was finished, but it wasn’t that bad. I ended up using frozen vegetables that steam when you put them in the microwave, so maybe that helped.

When I approached some of the staffers at 9NEWS and told them what I wanted them to taste, I sensed some hesitation. However, the results were unanimous. Everyone liked the “stinky casserole” despite the name!

Thank you for the recipe, Lori! What a great addition to the Thanksgiving feast!
