Toyota Sienna recalled to fix sliding doors

Defective sliding doors that could open while the vehicle is in motion have prompted a safety recall of about 838,000 Toyota minivans globally, including 744,000 in the U.S.

The Japanese automaker said Tuesday that it would conduct a recall for 2011-16 Sienna models in the U.S. The company said it is currently developing a fix.

The company said that when the sliding doors are “impeded,” a circuit can become overloaded, opening a motor fuse.

“If this occurs when the door latch is in an unlatched position, the door could open while driving, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant,” Toyota said in a statement.

Toyota spokesman Victor Vanov declined to say whether the defects have been linked to any accidents, injuries or deaths.

Toyota will notify owners in mid-January. Automakers conduct safety-recall fixes for free.
