Toys “R” Us announced it will stop selling a Tonka truck Sunday, after a Washington family’s Christmas gift for their grandson apparently caused their real pick-up truck to burst into flames.

The Harden family, of Bellingham, Washington, said they bought the Tonka 12V Ride-On Dump Truck from a local Toys “R” Us on Friday, but on the way home the toy caught fire.

Delmond Harden said he pulled over to put out the flames, but as he drove back to the store to return the toy, it ignited again, this time setting his truck on fire.

“The firefighter … doused the truck with water and I’m, I still can’t believe it, we almost shut (Interstate)-5 down, and it was just a toy for our grandson, who would have known,” Harden told NBC Seattle affiliate KING.

Harden said Toys “R” Us apologized and gave him a refund.

Nicole Hayes, a Toys “R” Us spokeswoman, said the fire appears to be an isolated incident and the company has not decided to instate a full recall, but has taken the toy off shelves while they investigate. It no longer appears on the store’s website either.

“We made a proactive decision to pull the item out of an abundance of caution and an investigation into the incident is currently taking place,” she said. “In the meantime, we are working closely with Dynacraft, the manufacturer, to determine the cause.”

Dynacraft did not immediately return requests for comment.

The decision to pull the truck from shelves comes a week before Black Friday, the kick-off to the holiday shopping season. In years past, Toys “R” Us has faced fierce holiday competition from brick-and-mortar rivals and online retailers like Amazon and eBay.
