Winter is here! Snow at the top of the tram

Coachella Valley residents awoke Monday to a spectacular view – white powder covering the top of the San Jacinto Mountains.

According to Greg Purdy, public affairs manager for the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, an inch and a half of measurable snow has accumulated, putting an end to the annual snow guessing contest.

The first 10 contestants who predicted Nov. 21 as the first day of snow at the station will all receive four tram admissions and a special gift. The contest began Oct. 1 and garnered 863 entries, more than double last year’s entries.

The first snow of the season was a result of colder temperatures and moisture moving through the region. According to the Aerial Tramway’s weekly planner and meteorologist Gregg Potter, it may not last long though. Temperatures will be mild and mostly sunny skies throughout the rest of the week.

If you’re interested in a snowy hike or snow angels head up soon. Remember to dress accordingly because the top of the tram is typically 30 degrees cooler than the desert floor.
