It happens every season – a specific high street piece becomes ubiquitous among fashion editors, street style stars and bloggers. That piece represents a certain mood or spirit, and it tends to sell out fast.
For autumn/winter 2016, that item is a pair of wide-leg trousers with a sporty side band from Zara. The £59.99 trousers have been viewed thousands of times on its website and are selling out fast, reports the Guardian.
So what’s the appeal? Firstly, the trousers tap into the omnipresent athleisure trend in a grown-up way – less crop tops and tracksuits (although the latter is enjoying a comeback), more fluid silhouettes with a retro sporty nod. Secondly, they channel Chloe’s track pants – which came in burgundy and camel with two stripes down the side. Thirdly, they were worn by Olivia Palermo during Fashion Month, who showed us all how to wear it – namely with a roll neck and shirt.
So for now Zara holds the crown for creating the high-street’s most desired item of the season. But with Alexa Chung’s second Marks Spencer collection launching in November, Zara will have to work hard to hold its ground.
